TRANSFORMING EUROPE: WWI AND ITS CONSEQUENCES 1918-2018

Autor: Zdenko Antolković, 6. 4. 2016.

TRANSFORMING EUROPE: WWI AND ITS CONSEQUENCES 1918-2018  is a 3-year interdisciplinary Erasmus+ project for secondary school students, which focuses on the central guiding question of how World War I and its consequences have shaped the process of transforming Europe from 1918 to 2018.

It was designed by Goetheschule Essen (Germany), Prywatne Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace im. I.J. Paderewskiego (Poland), Prva gimnazija Varaždin (Croatia), Ikast-Brande Gymnasium (Denmark), and Rotterdam International Secondary School (The Netherlands), with the overall aim of enabling young people between 14 and 18 to discover the interconnectedness of history and modern politics and the timeless ethical and cultural lessons that can be learned from WWI literature, science and art. The project is designed in six modules, of which the first one has already been completed and the second module is currently ongoing.

Module 1 (Sep 2015 - Jan 2016) focused on HISTORY and encouraged students from Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Poland and The Netherlands to ask critical questions about how the war and post-war politics have shaped Europe. After extensive reseach on political alliances, reparation requests, territorial conflicts and prerequisites for the founding of a League of Nations, students ran a week-long simulation of the Paris Peace Conference 1919 and took the role of country ambassadors whose aim was to work out a just and lasting peace treaty. Our students who participated in this module were: Lorena Jerbić, Mia Šarić Horvat, Ema Sabljak, Sonja Tomiek and Franjo Papec. The teachers who supported and coordinated them were Ivan Lončar and Ivan Lajnvaš.

Module 2 (Mar 2016 - Sep 2016) focuses on LITERATURE and encourages students from Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Poland and The Netherlands to work creatively with poems and prose of the time. Our students who are currently participating are Ariana Slaviček, Nikolina Bistrović, Dorotea Neuberg, Matija Benić and Arian Peharda, with the support of their teacher Ivan Lajnvaš.

The upcoming future modules will focus on other aspects of the main topic, such as technology and science, non-fictional sources and arts.
